lyrics

His name was Trigger Luke & he had the fastest draw
He’d killed three sheriffs he lived by his own law
1 Day after game of cards & the whisky poured hot
A woman waited for trigger upstairs in a cot
He and the bartender her price but tempers
began to fly
Another claimed an earlier payment
And he was shot down on the pavement
Not dead but never to be a man again
If what I’m saying you can understand
& Trigger quietly walked away
He stayed with the woman for three days
He left town & no one saw him months on end
Rumors filtered in that he’s been changed
I heard he crossed paths with a travelin preacher
Trigger drew his gun but the man had
reached him
I heard he lay down his gun
Smashed his bottle on the ground
I heard he cried that day
I can’t believe what I’ve heard said
He won’t ever touch another woman
& He was beaten by a man
& He’s coming back to town
& 5 men want to gun him down
I woke up late to se exactly what had passed
I saw Luke lying dead of a shotgun blast
I heard Luke rode in at the crack of dawn
As enemies confronted him with their guns drawn
They said they wanted a fight
To pay him back for their lost rights
Luke just asked to forgive him
He said he had a new life to give them
“Long ago I was lost”
His next words were drowned
By the shots
Someone heard his last breaths
He said “Lord forgive them”
